About this Project:

Help us design a new logo for Emoti-Con!

Our project addresses what Emoticon represents from a youth perspective; an opportunity to access a community that welcomes and celebrates students’ innovation on how to use digital tools for positive changes.

Project 1:

Our project #1 is a logo proposition for the future of Emoti-Con. We chose the aspect of power and atom. Our team combined the idea of the battery in the old logo and redesigned it. The battery is formed by the shape created by the letters of Emoticon. The circle surrounded by the letters represent the idea of an infinite unity in this community. The circles and the upside down “u” shape symbolizes every human figure in the community.

1. The idea of Emoticon being fresh and a community meant to highlight young minds guided our designs. The front was designed in a rigid form along in the shape of a battery.

2. Unity is represented in the early designs with the shape of a circle involved throughout designs as we try to make the shape unique and symbolizes Emoticon.

3. We hope to convey the idea of the foundation building on top of the access created by the community in Emoticon. We made this into a potential logo design to represent and embrace the unexpected sources of energy and innovation.

Project 2:

The typeface for Emoticon was designed with blocks of rectangles to visualize the logo in a “game” style. We worked on incorporating this style and typeface design into a concept of energy. The potato is reminiscent of childhood science experiments where potatoes become energy sources to power light bulbs. We made this into a potential logo design to represent and embrace the unexpected sources of energy and innovation. Therefore, “Emoticon” is being lit up by this unexpected power source.

Feedback from the Judges:

👏 Sr. Director of After School and Informal Education at Mouse — Emoti-Con Judge
I love both of these so much, but I think project 1 does the best job visually communicating the idea of Emoti-Con as a community/network. I also like how it kind of looks like fireworks too! Great job!!

👏 Sr. UX Designer at Adobe — Emoti-Con Judge
I am so impressed with both concepts and the metaphors behind them. They are both very well thought out and deep in meaning. Designing typefaces is such a hard thing to do! And you guys created an amazing concept in your second proposal for the typeface and I think it represents what you were set out to achieve. Integrating the typeface with the potato was brilliant. I feel like we've all had projects with a potato and can relate! I do however think the first proposal is a stronger design direction. The concept is solid. The visual representation of Unity is simple, clear, and easy to scale. Well done!

👏 Marketing Manager, Scaled Programs at Google for Education — Emoti-Con Judge
Both are great, but I will cast my vote for project 1, as it feels to me like a natural evolution of the current logo! Additionally, it has a nice sense of symmetry, which makes it easy to recognize.

Great work on the logo designs, they all look great! I really appreciate the analysis that went into the creation of each logo. It is great to see the themes present themselves in the artwork. I'm a big fan of #1 in particular as it combines the tech and human elements of emoti-con.

I really like the project 1 design(s) as it's easier to read and more aesthetically pleasing to the eye.

The first one!!!!!!!!!!!!
Lucas 👏 a High School Student
I like Project 1 better because I think it is more of a continuation of the original Emoticon logo, which I liked the aesthetic of.

Project 1

I like the second one much much better, just for the second one, the letters are a bit unledgible. You should work on making them easier to read.
Timothy 👏 a High School Student from Brooklyn
I love both so much but I think Project 1 is just a bit better
Elnor 👏 a High School Student from Brooklyn
Both are really creative but in my opinion Project 1 is a bit better.
