About this Project:
Trash to fashion is a fun, colorful, game for kids grades 1-8 can play. The game is all about educating kids on the affects, and dangers of pollution. The idea was thought of when I realized how disgusting, and dangerously polluted my city New York City was and I realized how it can affect people’s health, while many people in poverty can’t afford good clothes for themselves and their families. So I wanted to choose the G4C theme of “Recycle the Runway” to educate people on this topic more. I also wanted a more of a fun twist to get kids interested so I added trash-monster as the villain for more of a fun sci-fi element to it. The project works through the playing screen and pressing different arrow keys to move the main character to collect all the trash and avoid the trash monster. After you collect all the trash pieces you choose what kind of dresses you want.

Feedback from the Judges:
I liked how you laid out the concepts for the application design—seeing the colors and typefaces you hope to use is a good way to begin organizing your thoughts when designing an application. I also think the game is fun and well-intentioned. By teaching kids about the dangers of pollution and waste through a game, you are setting them up to better understand the problem when they are older. Something to think about: is there a way you could actively encourage recycling in the real world via the game? Maybe if users recycle bottles, they earn game credits? Overall a fun concept with valuable lessons for its users!
I think this is an engaging game app with a really good message! I like that the game play mimics the real world in showing that recycled clothing (or shopping secondhand!) can have a positive impact on the planet. I also love the color palette and aesthetic you chose for this app as it feels inspired by the runway/fashion industry (which also has its hidden monsters). One area where I could see you taking this app a step further is by expanding the "more info" section by potentially including information about fast fashion or listing sustainable clothing brands.
Love the illustrations! Nicely done. It's so great to see new game designers emerging! If you decide to take the next step with this, I recommend you do a little prototyping to decide which keys to align to the character's movements with. Get some feedback from your friends on the current set vs the arrow keys vs "WASD" which are other format you might see game designers using.
