“Women in History: A tribute to bell hooks and her legacy of love”

About this Project:

I made this project as a part of the Tech Scholars program at the New York historical society. I was with a group of about 10 other girls and we were taught the basics of the HTML and CSS coding languages over the course of 5 days. This was so we could code our own short autobiographical websites on an underrepresented woman in history. I chose to make my website on author bell hooks, and I based the design for my website on her book "All About Love". The red and black understated design is meant to mimic the cover of "All About Love". I chose to do this specific design because I had read All About Love during the summer and it really moved me. I admired bell hooks' view on love as a tool of resistance.

More About this Project

This project was incredibly special to me and sparked a genuine interest in computer science and coding. I never would've thought to pursue any kind of STEM subject in college until I went to the NYHS Tech Scholars program. Being able to write about one of my favorite authors while also gaining a new skill is one I'll never forget

The first thing that stood out to me was finding out this student actually coded this website. Navigation bars can sometimes be tedious and this student did a great job with it! The advice I would give back to this student is to have a little more fun with css maybe include animations! Overall this student should continue computer science in the future because their coding skills were beyond impressive.

I truly admire how the student made a connection to her passion for coding with her inspiration for bell hooks. I think the overall project looks great! For future reference, it would be nice to see if the student included more animations. Overall, great job Bianca! Your future in STEM is looking bright!

I absolutely love that you used bell hook's book cover for All About Love for the inspiration for your interface design! What a great idea! I also appreciate that you have a good mix of images and text, and that you site your sources in a way that is clear. I think you did a great job with your subject matter, design, and organizing your information. I think you have a future in web design or UX/UI design if you want!

Hey Bianca,

I love bell hooks. My high school best friend whose name is also Bianca introduced me to her. 🙂
I am impressed that you replicate how the bell hooks' All About Love book cover on your site, is very clever and creative. I'd love to see more of hooks' work included on your site, as I believe she also made an impactful role in gender, race, and feminity.
You have a bright future in STEM, keep it up!

Wow! Amazing job coding this on your own after learning for such a short time! I'm so happy you are inspired to want to learn a STEM subject. This was a very insightful project on Bell Hooks, and you coded a nicely laid out website. Would love to see you explore more web design for fun and creative pages. Keep up the good work!
