“Joy Mei > Ivory Vanilla: Little Girls Being Affected By Media”

Creators: Mia and Amelia
High School Students from Global Kids / Girl Hack
Girl Hack Women Rep In Media Ameila 2022

About this Project:

This is a project centered around the topic of how representation of women in media has a large impact on the lives of young girls everywhere. We came up with the idea after looking into social media's portrayal of women and the main demographic for most of it.

We created a character meant to be a teenager who is easily impressionable, especially after growing up surrounded by white media. Both the biography and the art work show the change and affects it has had on her.

This is such an important issue that needs to be on the forefront of all of our minds. I love the imagery you created and shared -- it really shows how different factors impact us all. I'd love to see some more details on how your project will engage the audience and how you will achieve your mission. This is a great art project and storyline you have so far and I'd love to see more someday!

You are a very talented artist! You do a great job in conveying emotion with simple lines, and using color, light, shadow and composition to tell a story. I would love to see this expanded into a whole comic book! The themes of racism and body dysmorphia in beauty standards and on social media, and the negative impact these things have on people's self image and mental and physical health are really important topics that we all need to address. I think you have found a beautiful and unique way to express that. I could see this becoming a powerful social media campaign as well. I hope you keep making more art!

This is such an important topic to highlight, and one that we all should be paying more attention to, I commend you on choosing a topic that's very meaningful and relevant today. Really incredible job with the art submission, I'd love to see more about how you imagine telling the story of the character. The power of this project is going to come from narrative, which already has an excellent start with the profile outlines, and would love to see how that's developed and then shared with your target audience.
