About this Project

My project is a social media app that allows people who are new to a country to communicate with one another and discuss their adaptation and adjustment experiences. It's an app for socializing and not feeling alone, in addition to exchanging experiences and tips. It's a community, not simply an app.

This app is intended to be a social platform for friends and families, but it can also be used as a learning space. This app is similar to popular social platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and others.

What the Judges are Saying

I really loved this project, it is so thoughtful! I liked how you interviewed members within your own community and created a solution for them. I can see the level of thought that went into creating each screen and I think there is a lot of potential for this app. I encourage you to continue creating different screens for all of the ideas you thought out so that it could be a full mobile app experience. Great work on this project!
Great problem to be solving! I love that you followed a traditional design process (starting with user interviews and THEN designing a solution), and I also think the wireframes are very impressive. I would agree with other judges that it would be awesome to see some more mockups built as social networks tend to have a lot of screens that are important for user retention and action.
This app really hits home. Having human connection, community, and a sense of belonging is important for anyone – especially individuals who have uprooted their lives and traveled sometimes thousands of miles to live somewhere else. Having an app that specifically looks to find a solution to this isolation is empathetic and exactly the kind of human-centered design work that we all need more of. I encourage you to interview more people in an effort to identify exactly what helped (and didn't help) individuals as they started their lives in a new place. This will help you build out the features of your app. Also, are there different features or pieces for people who have been in the new place for a few years? Perhaps different entry points into the app – "Are you new and need support?" or "Are you looking to lend support?" Overall, a fantastic job! Congratulations!
Your project takes an original approach to fostering belonging and a sense of creating a community for immigrants, especially first-generation travelers (who are trailblazers in their families and often may have a longer learning curve). This APP idea made me think about the great potential to be a part of the onboarding or knowledge sharing for newly enrolled students into high school/colleges or even language schools across the USA. I wonder which additional resources you would like to focus on providing users once they are connected. As you continue to develop your idea, it would be great to see survey results to which resources to prioritize for users as well. There is great potential for use with your idea; thanks for creating!
Omogbolahan,

As a first-generation American, this speaks to me on so many levels. I think this is a much-needed app in our community. It truly does hone in the sense of community despite being far away from home and sometimes, alone in a new country. I really like how you were able to include resources and a community social page. I would like to see in the next version of your app, a "Need any help" button and translate the app into their native language.
Incredible job, and keep it up!
