“Grace Lee Boggs: Remembering her story”

Creators: Amanda

About this Project:

The challenge my project addresses is the lack of representation of women throughout history. I was introduced to HTML and CSS, for which I had to get used to coding; it was almost as if I was learning another language. I firstly started by researching women in history who I have never heard of regardless of the impact of their achievements. That is how I stumbled upon Grace Lee Boggs, who was an activist. The research part was simple, however, when it came to designing it I wanted to make the project appealing to its audience. I used replit, HTML, and CSS to be able to complete this project, as each code that is written has a significant task to make my project complete.

I love the idea of bringing light to impactful women that have been lost in history. I suggest finding a font that still had the handwritten look, but maybe is a little easier to read. Great work!

Hi Amanda -- Thanks for sharing this work on the life of Grace Lee Boggs. As you pointed out, stories of great woman have often been lost in history and creating a medium to immortalize their stories is a powerful way to both amplify their legacy and inspire the next generation. It is clear you put in great effort to both research Grace Lee Boggs life and construct a well-written essay. Additionally, it's incredibly impressive that you were able to learn to web design in such a short time period!

As a next step, I'd encourage you to consider how websites may be able to tell historical stories more effectively than a paper/essay. How can you embed other mediums (vidoes, links, GIFs, etc) into your site to tell the story? You mentioned the goal of telling the story of other great women -- how would your platform scale to include other, similar stories?

Overall, great job and I'd be excited to see you continue to grow this platform!

Thank you for sharing this project, Amanda! It's so wonderful to see the stories of our AAPI activist elders shared by the fresh voices of youth leaders. Thank you for reminding us about the importance of intersectional feminists like Grace Lee Boggs! I love that this project reflects both on Boggs' life & work and your own process of learning to create with code. Your reflection on how you'll continue to grow as a web designer was super thoughtful and I can't wait to see what you do next. Bravo!

Great work, Amanda! I love how your project has both social justice and technical components.

You well articulate the need for women's stories and impact to be more present in our historical and cultural narratives. Thank you for elevating Grace Lee Boggs, and other important women such as Henrietta Lacks, and sharing important and unknown details about their work and lives.

Also, it's very impressive that you developed coding skills in such a short amount of time. I look forward to seeing what you do next and wish you the best in your journey!

Thank you for a record-breaking 14th anniversary event! Comments are officially closed until next year.
