Globalcleaning

About this Project:

Hi, our names are Riley, Anthony, Ethan, and Jordan. We are 6th grade students at MS 582. Our app is called Global Cleaning. The app is designed to help our community become more involved with cleaning our planet by trying to put an end to littering. There is so much litter all around the world which causes water, soil and air pollution so we wanted to design a fun way where people can get involved to help put an end to littering around the world.

The app has features where users can take pictures and post areas in the community where they have spotted litter. Users can join a leadership board and earn points if they clean an area where there is litter. They can also report litter to local volunteer organizations and help guide them to locate litter around their community so their employees can come pick it up. Our app includes a game where users can pick up trash in the areas where litter is usually found and they can earn medals. Another feature that users can use to help support them with the app is a settings page where they can have access to blue-tooth, audio, visual, and keyboard settings. Users will give permission for the app to use their camera so they can take pictures and scan where trash is located and pick it up, they also can use the map to locate where litter is being reported to help clean up the world.

We were inspired to do this project because we thought about the oceans and streets of NYC and how dirty it is, and full of trash.

If we were to build this project we would make it work by hiring employees to monitor the live maps of where all the trash is and connect with local nonprofit organizations to pick up the trash.

This is a very real issue in our community. I like the fact that you chose a problem that is big but one where the average citizen equipped with a phone can really make an impact.

Your design is simple and does not confuse the user but you thought of adding some essential features: gamification to keep the user engaged, a photo capability to prove that the area you are designated does indeed have a trash problem.
Overall I think this is a great app idea and I think the city should immediately adopt this and get it fully developed so citizens can help clean the city.

Great job!

Hi team - Kudos to you for picking such a massive and important issue. We need great thinkers like you to construct solutions to our environmental woes and ensure our planet will be livable for future generations. I'd be interested in hearing more about the user experience of your application: how would the users report trash cleanup and earn points? What would the scoring mechanism be? Overall, thank you for considering how we can better use technology to save our planet :)

Great job! I've seen app concepts like this before but your detail in your design made this stand out above those other apps. Maybe talk to local businesses and see if you could trade cleanup for products in the neighborhood such as free meals, free uber rides, subway rides, etc..

Riley, Anthony, Ethan, and Jordan -- thank you for tackling such an important issue. You have done a number of things really well:

- You found a way to build community by encouraging people to solve a problem together. Everyone can be part of the solution!

- The game element of this can keep people engaged for longer periods of time. Are there ways that you can use this game design to gain support from community businesses or a local parks/sanitation department?

I'm very much looking forward to seeing how this project evolves. You have something special here!

This project is very helpful for the environment and it would really help to stop Climate Change. Something you may want to add would be educating the public on what recycling is.
