“A Bud of Hope”

Creators: Liliana and Aurora
Middle School Students from Games for Change @ Brooklyn College Community Partnership
Bud of Hope title screen

About this Project:

This is a text based game by Liliana and Aurora from BCCP Afterschool at STAR Early College MS.

We designed this game for the Games 4 Change Student Challenge under the theme of "Shaping the world for difference"

Play the game here: https://a-bud-of-hope.glitch.m...

A young character goes through social and emotional hardships over the course of 5-7 days and finds a way to change their school for the better.

Some people are just bugs. Why not make an environment where giving them a chance can’t end in defeat?

The theme should be discovered by about the third day (Wednesday), and will be expressed by the character’s friend saying something about wishing they could change the antagonist. This will give the character some thoughts and let them decide what to do.

The art that goes with this game was created on a tablet

Very impressed with the artistic designs done by Aurora it was very creative and unique, also Liliana's development skills are outstanding especially considering the age group for these students. I look forward to this game being complete. Well done!

This is beautiful. The emotional thoughtfulness, the premise of the story, the artwork. It's really impressive for students your age, and an ambitious project over all.

As someone who was a sensitive kid but always part of the action, and who just wanted to create a harmonious environment at my own school, I think this game could help kids with similar feelings to feel less alone and think about ways to act on those feelings. That could definitely have a ripple effect into the world. I hope you keep developing this! And/or similar projects. I would love to see how the story continues to unfold based on the actions players choose...... Beautiful work. Keep making things!!

Liliana and Aurora – you created such a strong narrative just using text, which is not done very much anymore! I was excited to see the text animations incorporated to the story and believe you should continue to figure out ways to incorporate these as you keep developing the game because they make it feel more unique than other text-based experiences. Overall, great job!
